Coconuts have long been an integral part of southern India’s agrarian industry, deeply rooted in the region’s history.
Madhu Kargund, son of a farmer from Arsikere in Karnataka, grew up under the nurturing shade of coconut trees, fostering a profound attachment to his agricultural heritage.
Recognizing the dire circumstances faced by farmers and the unsustainable livelihoods they endured, Madhu embarked on a mission to uplift his community through his company, Tengin. This startup epitomizes the essence of advocating for local industries.
The plight of farmers weighed heavily on Madhu’s heart as he witnessed many abandoning agriculture altogether and migrating to cities in search of better opportunities.
He identified three critical issues plaguing the farming community: lack of a stable income, limited demand for their produce, and a dearth of avenues for upskilling.
Drawing inspiration from the abundant coconut resources in southern India, as well as his personal connection to this versatile fruit, Madhu recognized a business opportunity that could simultaneously benefit the farmers.
Tengin, headquartered in Bengaluru, is a coconut-centric brand that specializes in an array of coconut-based products. From virgin coconut oil and coconut oil-fried chips to bowls crafted from coconut shells and soaps, Tengin offers a diverse range of items.
To preserve the traditional manufacturing methods and support local communities, the brand collaborates with villagers and sources coconuts from nearby areas.
Although Madhu refrains from disclosing the company’s turnover, he mentions that their products span approximately ten categories and are priced between ₹100 and ₹850.
Madhu emphasizes the company’s commitment to maintaining the traditional manufacturing process. He explains that certain technological methods can strip coconuts of their valuable nutrients, consequently diminishing their nutritional value.
Instead, Tengin employs the time-honoured cold press technology to extract the oil, which is then packaged by farmers. Handcrafted by women, the company’s candles, soaps, and bowls exude an artisanal touch.
Moreover, Tengin aspires to foster transparency by introducing coconut tourism, offering customers an immersive experience in the fields and showcasing the process behind coconut product creation.
