India’s Transgender people who are first in their fields
As attempts are being made to reduce gender discrimination, and encourage transgender people, many become successful in their chosen fields.
Here are some successful transgender people who broke their shackles and became the first in their fields.
Sathyasri Sharmila, a 36-year-old from Tamil Nadu is the first transgender lawyer in India. She chose the field to fight against injustice. She struggled a lot and faced several challenges due to her gender. She recently enrolled her name in the Bar Council Of Tamil Nadu And Puducherry and become the country’s first transgender lawyer
Mumtaz, a social worker, is the first transgender person to contest in elections in Punjab. She contested in the elections from the Bhucho Mandi constituency. She has been working with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for more than 11 years.
Shabnam Mausi is the first transgender MLA. She faced several hardships in her life. She contested elections from Sohagpur constituency, Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh and became an MLA. Though she did not attend school, she learned 12 different languages.
Joyita Mondal became the first judge at the age of 29. She was appointed at Lok Adalat in north Bengal in October 2017. She wanted to pursue a degree in law while working for transgender rights.
Shabi is the first transgender soldier in India. Earlier, she joined Marine Engineering Department of the Eastern Naval Command. Yet, after undergoing a sex reassignment surgery in 2016 in Delhi, she joined the naval base in Vishakhapatnam.
Prithika Yashini of Tamil Nadu is the first transgender sub-inspector. She went against many odds in her life.
Manabi Bandopadhyay is the first transgender college principal in India. She became the principal of Krishnagar Women’s College on June 7, 2015. She completed Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and became the first transgender person in the county to finish it.
Jiya Das from Kolkata is the first transgender operation theatre or OT technician.
