Delhi Electricity Subsidy: Annual Registration Likely Soon
Delhi’s electricity subsidy system may soon shift to an annual registration model, changing how households claim the benefit.
Consumers who want subsidised power will reportedly have to renew their preference every year.
Under the proposed system, eligible consumers would need to register through a dedicated government portal.
They would also have to confirm that they want to continue receiving the subsidy. Those who skip the annual process could lose the benefit.
The move is being considered as Delhi’s subsidy bill continues to rise. The government wants to manage the growing financial pressure linked to the scheme.
The change would also ensure that only consumers who actively seek the benefit remain enrolled.
Consumers can currently opt for subsidised electricity. However, annual renewal would add a new step to the existing process. The proposed portal is expected to make registration easier for households.
The subsidy covers electricity consumption of up to 200 units for eligible consumers. Under the new arrangement, residents would have to express their preference each year to continue receiving free power or the applicable subsidy.
The government’s decision comes amid rising expenditure on electricity support. The subsidy cost had reached ₹4,037.63 crore by February 2026.
For 2026-27, the Delhi government has set aside ₹3,500 crore for electricity subsidies.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s electricity consumer base has crossed 7.3 million. Domestic users account for more than 80% of these connections.
As the number of beneficiaries grows, the financial burden on the government has also increased.
The annual registration requirement could therefore become an important part of the subsidy framework.
Consumers who depend on the benefit may need to watch for the government’s official portal and registration schedule.
The proposed system would make the subsidy an active yearly choice rather than an automatic continuation. Residents will need to complete the process on time to avoid losing their benefit.
