Delhi’s Rooftop Solar Push Gets a Major Boost

India’s shift towards cleaner energy is gaining momentum, with households playing an important role in the transition.

Delhi has now introduced a new incentive to make rooftop solar more accessible to residents.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the dedicated ‘Delhi PM Surya Ghar’ registration portal on September 21, 2026.

The platform will simplify applications under the national PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. It will also provide details about subsidies, authorised vendors and complaint services.

Under the initiative, eligible households can receive financial support for rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW. The Centre offers a subsidy of up to ₹78,000.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government will provide an equal incentive of up to ₹78,000. Therefore, eligible households can receive combined support of up to ₹1.56 lakh.

Domestic consumers using up to 400 units of electricity each month can access systems up to 3 kW without upfront payment, according to the government.

However, installations will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis through the dedicated portal.

The scheme also extends support to group housing societies. Subsidies for solar installations in common areas have risen from ₹2,000 to ₹11,000 per kW.

In addition, households with limited rooftop space can opt for systems of up to 2 kW.

Households consuming 0–200 units of electricity each month can receive an additional incentive based on reduced consumption after installing rooftop solar panels.

Moreover, authorised vendors will remain responsible for operating and maintaining the systems for the first five years, helping ensure proper upkeep and reliable performance for participating households.

The Delhi government plans to bring rooftop solar systems to around 2.30 lakh families under the programme.

Power Minister Ashish Sood said the initiative could support Delhi’s ambition to become a “Solar Capital”.

Meanwhile, households may benefit from lower electricity bills and could potentially earn additional income by supplying surplus solar power to the grid.
