Doctor uses titanium plates for bypass surgery in Maharasthra
Dr. Rahul Kaiche has gained a distinction as the first ever to use titanium plates instead of traditionally used wires for sternal closure in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery. He is a surgeon at Wockhardt hospital in Nashik. He became the first ever surgeon to perform this innovative technique in Maharashtra and the second every to do this in India.
He used titanium plates for closing the mamory sternum bone after the open heart bypass surgery on a 64 years patient. The surgery was performed at the charitable Saibaba hospital in Shirdi. The patient upon whom this surgery was conducted is Bashir Sayyed Noor, a tractor mechanic who consulted Dr. Kaiche for CABH. The patient had already had his angiography.
The doctor stated that the patient weighed 100 kg and has been a chronic smoker. In such patients who have increased probabilities of coughing and infections, there is a possibility that the wires that are traditionally used in CABG surgeries to close the sternum bone break off due to pressure. This may lead to complications and infections for the patient. Recent research has opened the alternatives to such risks and it is in form of titanium plates – 2 H shaped and one U shaped fitted by titanium screws.
