Facts about ISRO’s Re-usable Satelite Launch Vehicle

When a satellite is launched, it is a costly affair as a new vehicle has to be constructed to launch it. This is a very costly affair for both the government and space research organizations. In order to bring this cost down, ISRO has planned to make a re-usable satellite launch vehicle. The vehicle is set to be tested in September.

  1. The Re-usable satellite launch vehicle has the potential to bring the cost of satellite launch by 90 percent.
  2. For the first time, the satellite launch vehicle will be landed in the ocean, however, the aim is to make it land on an airstrip in Sriharikota.
  3. The launch vehicle will fly into outer space at five times the speed of sound. It will deliver the payload in space and land back on earth just like an aircraft.
  4. The speed of the vehicle can be controlled by the fins. The vehicle has been fixed with protective tiles in order to protect the equipment from the friction heat while coming back.
  5. The weight of the launch vehicle – Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD) is 1.5 tonne. It can bring down the cost of launching a 1kg satellite from $5000 to one-tenth of its cost, $500.
