The Coconut Blessings of Moodabidri

The Coconut Blessings of Moodabidri

Across Karnataka, many ancient temples remain deeply woven into the faith and daily lives of local communities.

Among them, the Hanuman temple in Moodabidri holds a special place for devotees seeking blessings and fulfilled wishes.

Moodabidri, also known as Mudbidri and Moodbidre, lies in Dakshina Kannada district. It is around 40 km from Mangaluru by road.

The town is traditionally associated with bamboo, which once grew abundantly here. Its name is linked to the Kannada words Moodu, meaning east, and Bidiru, meaning bamboo.

The centuries-old Hanuman idol is the heart of this temple. Devotees visit the shrine with strong faith, especially when they face difficult situations.

A distinctive offering here is tender coconut. People commonly offer five tender coconuts while praying for their wishes to come true.

Over the years, devotees have shared remarkable experiences that strengthened their belief in the deity. One widely remembered account concerns jewellery worth several crores stolen from a nearby temple.

Despite extensive police efforts, the thief remained missing. The temple authorities then turned to the Hanuman shrine and offered 5,000 coconuts.

They prayed for the recovery of the jewellery. Soon afterwards, police arrested the thief and recovered the stolen valuables.

Another popular story highlights the faith surrounding the temple. A sports event faced disruption because of heavy rain.

An organiser visited the shrine and offered tender coconuts, seeking favourable weather.

Surprisingly, the rain stopped at the stadium, allowing the event to continue. However, heavy rain continued in the surrounding areas.

For devotees, such incidents reinforce the belief that Hanuman listens to sincere prayers. The temple therefore represents more than an ancient place of worship.

It remains a spiritual destination where faith, tradition and personal experiences come together. For many visitors, offering tender coconuts is an expression of trust in the deity’s power and blessings.
