Significance of Garuda Panchami

Today is Garuda Panchami. Garuda Panchami or Naga Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Shravan month of the lunar calendar.

Garuda Panchami marks the love and affection of mother and son and bond between one another. The festival is dedicated to Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu for his love towards his mother Vinita.

Garuda Panchami is one of the most important festivals celebrated throughout India, especially in the southern parts of the country.

Garuda Gayatri mantra is chanted on this day. It is said to relieve the devotees from all kinds of Naga Dosha.


In addition to that, Garuda Vashikaran, Garuda Dandakam and Garuda Kavacham are also chanted to get the blessings of Garuda.

Devotees believe that chanting of these mantras 1008 times for 108 days starting from today would relieve them and their successors for the next 12 generations from all types of Sarpa dosha and misfortunes. It also fetches them good health, abundance of riches, good marital life and children.

Married women perform puja for the health and wellbeing of their children. Even, the newly married couple perform it for their marital bliss and prosperity.

Women also observe fasting and pray for the wellbeing of their siblings. They offer cow milk to snake pits.

Women also visit temples and worship snake idols.

They believe worshipping snakes would relieve the ill effects of snake planets Rahu and Ketu. It is believed to protect them from snakebites.

Devotees also believe that it would pacify the ill effects of Kala Sarpa Dosha in their birth chart.

Those who cannot visit snake pits or temples, perform puja at their home to a silver idol of snake. They perform Abhishekam and offer Prasad. It is also believed that feeding a pious Brahmin is auspicious on this day.

Cutting trees, ploughing of the fields and digging the soil are believed to be avoided.
