Need for more women representation in Parliament

Certain studies and facts showed that India has poor representation of women in the law-making process compared to many other countries.

India needs the representation of more women in Parliament.

Here are the reasons for this:

One of the main reasons is that if more women representation in the Parliament, then there are higher chances of passage of laws related to maternity and childcare related policies. Though men have concerns about women’s issues like menstrual health, not many can be focused on them as keen as women.

For example, the New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern increased the parental leave from 22 weeks to 26 weeks from July 2020.

Studies also showed that there is less corruption in countries where more women are represented in the government. The results of an analysis in 125 countries showed that there is an indirectly proportional relationship between bribes and women as MLAs or MPs.

It is also proved that women are more empathetic than men, hence they can understand and make more effective laws for the people in need.

Women are more collaborative and can make quick decisions on matters that affect the lives of people.

The study of the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) proved that economic performance has grown by 1.8 per cent when compared to that of men.

Unlike men, women have less percentage of charges against them. A report published in 2018 stated that 10 per cent of women legislators had pending charges against them which is 32 per cent against men.

Some past studies revealed that women leaders allocate resources properly. They also prioritize health and education on the top of all which helps build a healthy and concrete society.

However, all the political parties have allotted very few seats to women to contest in the elections.
