The indigenously developed supersonic surface to air missile – Aakash – has finally been inducted on Tuesday after a wait of over three decades. The missile is fit to target enemy helicopters, aircrafts and UAVs from an amazing range of 25 km.

The Aakash missiles were developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and they will boost the power of the Army Air Defence Crops which has so far depended on obsolete weapons for defence.

Dalbir Singh Suhag, the Army Chief General has stated in the dedication ceremony that this system will make sure than any vulnerabilities in the system will be taken care of. Furthermore, he stated that the armed forces are in the process of reinventing the Army Air Defence Corps command and control and how they manage battlefield.

The newly designed missiles are 96 percent indigenous which makes the capable of firing towards multiple targets in all possible weather conditions. This makes it very useful for providing short range missile cover to the vulnerable assets in the Army’s field force.

These weapon systems are set to be deployed towards the western borders of the country. The system will have command-to-line-of-sight guidance and relies on sophisticated radar and control systems to guide the missile to its targets.
