The initiation of Vinayaka Chaturthi Celebrations in Public

It is believed that LokmanyaTilak had initiated the celebrations of Vinayaka Chaturthi in public. He had recognized the appeal of the deity Ganesha and he popularized the festival to a national level. This was done in order to reduce the gap between Brahmins and non-Brahmins.As Ganesh Chaturthi is coming up, let us take a look at some of the fascinating facts related to it.

The largest idol of Lord Ganesh


The largest idol for Lord Ganesh in the world is installed at the Khairtabad State Library in Hyderabad at the time of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. The idol is then immersed at Hussain Sagar Lake.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is an 11 day festival in which thousands of people from many places across India visit the Khairtabadidol and get the blessings of Lord Ganesha. At the end of the festival, the idol is generally carried to the Hussain Sagar Lake where it is immersed. The immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesha marks the end of the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The construction of the Ganesh Idol at Khairtabad begins three months before the festival day. To construct it, nearly 200 workers work under a sculptor. They work day and night for those three months to complete the construction of the biggest Ganesh Idol.

The largest Laddu

It is a big tradition for Ganesh Chaturthi to make Laddus. The largest laddu is made by Sri Bhaktanjaneya sweets. The Laddu is 6.3 tonnes and it took over nine hour of time to make. The owner of the sweet shop SaladiSrinuBabu has claimed that it is not only the biggest laddu, but is also made in a short span of time which should be considered a record.

Srinu has stated that the Samithi (the organization which manages the festival), has set out to create a new record by making a 6.3 tonneladdu to the elephant god this year. The mega laddu was made with huge amounts of ingredients. The laddu took up 2,000 kilos of sugar, 1,800 kilos besan, 1,500 kilos of ghee, 400 kilos of dry fruits and several other extra ingredients. The laddu has approximately costed the shop Rs. 7 – 10 lakh.

Forms of Lord Ganesh

Lord Vinayaka has total 64 forms out of which 32 forms are considered very important. 16 out of them are the most significant forms. 8 forms are considered as the most auspicious among them and renowned as AshtaVinayaka.

Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir

SwetharkaGanapathi temple is located at Vishunpuri Colony, Kazipet, Telanga. Here the idol takes form from white CalotropisGigantea. According to NaradadiPurana, it was mentioned that the roots of white CalotropisGigantea take the form of Lord Ganesha after it completes 100 years of existence.

Trunk Facts

The turning of Ganesha’s trunk has some meaning according to Hindu mythology. If it is turned left, the rules are easy and one can perform a puja without any rules. The right turned trunk is related to the sun and is said to burn a person if proper rules are not followed for the puja. The trunks which are straight means that the Sushumna is entirely open.
