Train services resume at Amritsar
Dussehra celebrations turned deadly on Friday at Amritsar as a train ran over people who were watching the burning of Ravan’s effigy.
As a result, more than 60 people died on the spot and around 70 people were injured. Around 40 of the deceased have been identified.
And the remaining people who died have not yet been traced.
Each of them, among the organizers, Railways and police blamed one another for the train tragedy.
Some even argue that despite the organizers’ announcement not to stand near railway tracks, the people did not care.
The organizers said that a no-objection certificate was given to them from the police to conduct the event. But, the police department said that it is not enough, the organizers should also get permission from the municipal corporation.
The Commissioner of Amritsar Municipal Corporation stated that nobody had applied for permission to conduct the event.
However, the mishap took place and the blame game is continuing.
No one is ready to take the responsibility for the accident.
Meanwhile, the angry locals blocked the traffic around the accident spot and protested against the Punjab government and the Railways by raising slogans.
They also demanded for the resignation of Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu.
The shops were closed on Sunday in support of the train mishap.
The protestors demanded for the tracing of missing people and adequate compensation to the victims of the families.
They also started pelting stones at the policemen.
It was very difficult for the police to control the protestors. Commandos and the Rapid Action Force were deployed to control the crowd of people.
The protestors were cleared off the tracks with heavy difficulty. Finally, the train services were resumed after 40 hours of the incident.
Officials said that the goods train services started first, which will be followed by express trains.
