Amid financial crunch, Airtel and Vodafone decided to raise mobile phone charges from December 1.

Vodafone Idea released a statement saying that it would increase the prices of its tariffs from December 1, 2019, to provide the best services to their customers.

However, the proposed tariff was not disclosed by the company.

Soon after the announcement of Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel also announced that it would raise mobile service rates from December 1.

Vodafone Idea last week reported a loss of ₹50,921 crore for the second quarter. This loss includes the liability that came from the Supreme Court order.

This is the highest ever quarterly loss posted by any Indian corporate.

At the same time, Bharti Airtel also recorded a quarterly loss of ₹23,045 crore for the said period.

The cumulative loss of both companies was around ₹74,000 crore.

Bharti Airtel said that the telecom sector is highly capital intensive and requires constant investments due to its fast-changing technology cycles.

In this regard, Airtel would suitably increase the mobile service rates from December.

It also stated that TRAI would initiate bringing the rationality in pricing in the Indian mobile sector for viability.

Last month, the Supreme Court directed telecom companies, including Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel to pay dues as demanded by the Department of Telecom.

Vodafone Idea said that the telecom sector is facing acute financial stress and the continuity of its business would depend on the reliefs provided by the government.

The telecom sector is extremely important to support the vision of Digital India. Hence, the telecom operators are looking for reliefs from the government.

While Vodafone Idea has around 300 million mobile subscribers, Bharti Airtel has nearly 265 million mobile subscribers.

The decision of the telecom operators would affect their subscribers.
