A shift in India’s Israel Policy

A shift in India's Israel Policy

India, which has been a country that is a conventional supporter of Palestine is seemingly on its way to be recalibrating its policy towards Israel and also towards the Gulf region as a whole. This is happening with the scenery of turmoil within the region in the background.

The fact that the policy is changing can be seen with the recent actions of the government. For example, India has been abstinent on Friday during a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) vote criticizing Israel’s “alleged war crimes” in Gaza last year.

UNHRC has made a report which supported the vote in Geneva. The vote was made public last month.

According to it both Israel and Palestinian armed teams could have committed war crimes throughout. The war that occurred in Gaza for 50-days killed about 1,500 people. India was among the 5 countries that abstained. The others were Ethiopia, Paraguay, Macedonia and Kenya. The US, Israel’s long term ally, voted against the resolution.

India’s abstention follows an announcement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has plans of visiting Israel soon. He is the first Indian prime minister to do so since the restoration of diplomatic ties in 1992. India was once a firm supporter of Palestine.
