SC to hear on plea challenges HC order banning TikTok app

The Supreme Court yesterday agreed to hear a plea on April 15. The plea challenged the order of Madras High Court which directed the government to ban the TikToK app on the grounds of spreading pornographic content through it.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court passed an ex-parte order on the TikTok app.

In this context, Chinese company ByteDance filed a plea challenging the High Court’s order. And a Bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna agreed to hear the plea on the next Monday stating that billions of people are downloading this app.

On April 8, the Apex Court refused the urgent listing of the plea.

Earlier on April 3, the High Court directed the Centre to ban TikTok mobile application as it is spreading pornographic and inappropriate content.

This order came on a PIL that alleged the app is encouraging degrading and pornographic content.

Agreeing with it, the High Court directed the media not to telecast the video clips that are made using TikTok.

TikTok app helps users to create short videos to share with others like friends and colleagues.

The High Court asked the government whether it would enact a statue according to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act in the U.S.

The mater was postponed for further hearing on April 16.

The High Court also said that the authorities have not learnt the lessons from the past problems like Blue whale online game which claimed to have led the suicides of the several players.

The HC added that if policy makers act on time, they could take decisions to prevent such kind of apps.

Only when the officials and policymakers were able to act on the problems of society, the decision could be taken to prevent this kind of apps, it said.
