Pollution levels reach peak in Delhi

As the nation celebrated Diwali on Sunday, pollution reached peak levels in various parts in Delhi.

A day after Diwali celebrations, air quality in Delhi and Noida dipped to ‘very poor’ category. The air quality index was recorded 306 in Delhi and 356 in Noida today morning.

As per the sources, the emissions due to bursting of firecrackers, unfavourable weather and a substantial increase in stubble burning lead to a rise in pollution levels in the Nation’s capital.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded as 999 at Mother Dairy in Patparganj area and turned ‘hazardous’.

The AQI data shows that pollution level was with a high number of PM 10 at the National Malaria Institute, Dwarka by recording 763.

The air quality becomes poor in Delhi from mid-October to November each year due to stubble burning in surrounding states and emissions due to firecracker bursting during Diwali.

The situation seems to become worse in the coming days.

When the air quality is measured, 29 out of 37 stations in the national capital recorded as ‘very poor’.

In order to control the emissions from firecrackers, the Supreme Court ordered to fire only green crackers which is considered to lower the pollution levels by 30 per cent.

However, the response was poor from the buyers due to lack of varieties, limited stock and higher prices.

Even, several sellers are not aware of the norms to manufacture green crackers.

Hence, people bought conventional firecrackers. Last year also, they used normal firecrackers to burst which led to an increase in air pollution.

At the same, Mumbai recorded the cleanest air post-Diwali in five years. The major pollutants PM 2.5 and PM 10 were recorded at 32 and 43 respectively. Both of them recorded ‘Good’ category.
