PM participates in East Asia Summit

In order to reiterate India’s peaceful and open vision towards Indo Pacific region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 13th East Asia Summit in Singapore yesterday.

All leaders who participated in this summit had discussed the global and regional issues, including maritime cooperation.

PM interacted with the leaders of other nations before the East Asia Summit Retreat.

This is the 5th East Asia Summit of Prime Minister Modi.


The East Asia Summit (EAS) had been started in 2005, and India has been participating in this summit since its inception.

The EAS consists of 10 ASEAN nations including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, in addition to Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and the US.

Initially, 16 countries formed the EAS. Later, membership extended to 18 countries including Russia and the US.

The main objectives of the EAS are regional peace, security and prosperity.

Prime Minister Modi participated in the ASEAN-India Breakfast Summit in the morning. He emphasized the importance and necessity for maritime cooperation and significance of trade among the countries for the prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.

PM reached Singapore on November 14 to attend a series of summits including the prestigious Fintech Festival and to hold a meeting with US Vice President Mike Pence.

In addition to that, PM Modi held bilateral talks with several leaders of other Asian countries to strengthen ties in the areas of trade, security and defence.

He delivered a 30-minute speech to address the gathering of around 30,000 people at the Fintech Festival. He said that India is the best nation with improving digital technology and skilled youth for the fintech companies and startups.
