Monsoon Session 2025 set for heated debates

India’s Parliament began its Monsoon Session today, July 21, 2025, amid high political tensions and sharp opposition focus.

The month-long session, lasting till August 21, includes 21 sittings across 32 days. The session will pause from August 12 to August 18 for Independence Day celebrations.

The INDIA bloc plans to corner the Modi-led government on multiple fronts.

Top among them are Operation Sindoor, the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, and Trump’s claims of mediating Indo-Pak peace.

The opposition also aims to raise the revised voter list in Bihar and the recent Air India crash.

In Sunday’s all-party meet, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju outlined the agenda.

He urged cooperation for a smooth session and confirmed 17 key legislative items. He also noted the government is open to discussing any issue under parliamentary rules.

Crucially, this is the first session since Operation Sindoor, India’s precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari stressed that the government’s response to the terror attack would dominate debates. He also demanded the Prime Minister’s presence to answer opposition questions directly.

Among the major bills listed are the Income-tax Bill, 2025, and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which may impact future tax structures.

The session will also address the Manipur GST Amendment Bill, 2025, which replaces an earlier ordinance.

Parliament will discuss Manipur’s ongoing crisis, with voting on the state’s ₹2025-26 grant demands and an extension of President’s Rule.

Other legislation includes:

  • Indian Ports Bill, 2025
  • Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024
  • Jan Vishwas (Amendment) Bill, 2025
  • National Sports Governance Bill, 2025
  • Geoheritage Sites Bill, 2025

Both houses will deliberate on these critical matters throughout the session.

Meanwhile, political heat is likely to stay high, especially with calls for accountability and strong opposition coordination.

Kiran Rijiju emphasised that it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament, though whether that would happen remained uncertain.
