Kerala Houseboat mishap

A tragic incident occurred in Kerala, India, when a houseboat carrying more than 30 passengers capsized near the Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur area.

The state government confirmed that 20 people, including women and children, lost their lives. It also stated that four people were admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

The incident took place during the ongoing school vacation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered condolences and announced ex-gratia of ₹2 lakhs to the next of kin of each victim.


Rescue operations continue, and the post-mortem process has been expedited to release the bodies quickly to their families.

A houseboat carrying over 30 passengers capsized and sank near Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur area of Kerala.

It resulted in the death of 20 people, including women and children, on Sunday.

According to Sports Minister V Abdurahiman, the information on the confirmed deaths was obtained from various hospitals where the survivors were treated.

The minister also stated that four individuals are in critical condition and receiving treatment at a hospital in Kottakkal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced a compensation of ₹2 lakhs for each victim’s next of kin.

Overcrowding on the boat during an excursion is believed to be the cause of the incident, as boats are prohibited from operating after 6 pm.

PK Kunhalikutty, an MLA of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), expressed his condolences. He said the death toll is expected to rise as the rescue operation continues.

Health Minister Veena George called for an emergency meeting to assess the situation and ensure expert medical attention for the injured.

The post-mortem process will be expedited so that the bodies can be released to the families.

An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the accident.

The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, issued a statement expressing his condolences. He directed the district collector to coordinate an emergency rescue operation. He plans to visit the site on Monday.

The incident occurred near an estuary close to Thoovaltheeram Beach in Tanur.

The exact cause of the accident is still unknown. Apart from local residents, fire and police units also participated in the rescue operation. In addition, officials from the Revenue and Health departments also took part in the operations.
