Indian Government Slashes LPG Cylinder Prices by ₹200

In a much-needed respite for the public grappling with inflation, the Indian government has taken a significant step to alleviate the burden.

Following a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, a pivotal decision was reached regarding domestic gas cylinder prices, resulting in the approval of a substantial ₹200 subsidy on 14.2 kg LPG cylinders.

During a press briefing, Union Minister Anurag Thakur revealed that the cost of 14 kg LPG gas cylinders will witness a ₹200 reduction.

He also announced that the government plans to distribute 75 lakh new LPG connections free of charge under the Ujjwala scheme.

Presently priced at ₹1,103 in New Delhi, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder’s cost will be slashed to ₹903 from Wednesday due to the subsidy.

For beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme, the price will further drop to  ₹703, incorporating the continuing ₹200 subsidy per cylinder.

The minister attributed the decision to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intent to provide a gift to the women of the nation on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

The subsidy of ₹200 encompasses all domestic gas consumers, including those already receiving the ₹200 subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.

Notably, petroleum companies have experienced a positive turnaround in profits in recent months, after converting losses into substantial gains.

This move by the government to cut gas cylinder prices serves as a welcome gift to the common populace.

Earlier in August, the cost of commercial LPG cylinders had already seen a ₹100 decrease, bringing the price to ₹1,680.

Commercial LPG cylinders weighing 19 kg, were impacted by this price adjustment.

Against the backdrop of impending assembly elections in states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana etc., the discourse on cylinder prices has gained political significance.

The Madhya Pradesh government has hinted at further reductions, with the Congress party pledging to offer domestic LPG cylinders for ₹500 if elected.

In response, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that gas cylinders would be attainable for all during the month of Sawan for a mere ₹450.

He expressed intentions to explore options for making this arrangement permanent.

This price reduction brings welcome relief to households, aligning with the government’s efforts to alleviate financial strain on the populace.
