Government restores commercial LPG supply as energy situation improves

A stable fuel supply plays a vital role in keeping businesses and industries running without disruption.

The Centre has restored non-domestic packed LPG supplies to normal levels after the country’s fuel availability improved.

The decision brings significant relief to commercial establishments and industries that had struggled with shortages in recent months.

Consequently, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas directed Oil Marketing Companies to resume regular commercial LPG distribution across India.

Additionally, the government has relaxed restrictions on bulk LPG consumption. Trial users can now receive up to 50 per cent of their pre-crisis bulk LPG allocation.

As a result, factories, restaurants, hotels and several other commercial users can gradually return to normal operations.

Moreover, authorities have withdrawn sector-specific restrictions that were earlier introduced to protect household LPG supplies.

The temporary curbs became necessary after geopolitical tensions in the Middle East disrupted global energy markets. Those developments created uncertainty over India’s LPG imports and raised concerns about domestic availability.

Therefore, the government prioritised household cooking gas by limiting commercial and industrial consumption. It also instructed producers to divert C3 and C4 hydrocarbon streams primarily towards LPG production.

However, the improved supply situation has changed the outlook. Industries can once again use C3 and C4 gases for other manufacturing requirements.

Meanwhile, officials have assured consumers that domestic LPG production and household availability will continue without interruption.

Furthermore, the ministry has decided to strengthen monitoring mechanisms. A technical committee will regularly review the allocation of LPG-related resources across industries and submit reports to the government.

In addition, the Centre plans to build a unified database of commercial and industrial LPG consumers. This initiative will support better planning, efficient allocation and improved supply management during future disruptions.

At the same time, the government remains focused on expanding the use of piped natural gas (PNG).

Since PNG offers a cleaner and more sustainable fuel option, businesses that have already adopted it will continue using the network.

Similarly, eligible commercial consumers will gradually be encouraged to shift to PNG with support from city gas distribution companies.

The latest measures aim to strengthen India’s energy security while ensuring reliable fuel availability and promoting cleaner energy adoption across multiple sectors.
