Government to fight against triple talaq

In order to preserve the rights of women and promote gender equality, central government is expected to oppose the practice of triple talaq. The Apex Court issued notice on this issue with respect to the PIL filed by several Muslim women. The government is likely to respond to the notice and a committee met yesterday on this. Various Union Ministers are part of the meeting. These include Maneka Gandhi, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh and Manohar Parrikar.

Several individuals and NGOs have been seeking a ban on the practice of triple talaq and polygamy. According to a source, women are moving towards equality around the world and there is a need for our country to move towards equality as well.

The law ministry will draft a response to the notice of the Apex Court. It pursues the possibilities on this issue. Either a law will be made to ban the practice of tripel talaq or Uniform Civil Code will be implemented throughout the country. Before responding to the notice, the law ministry will check international practices as well. Many Islamic nations also banned these practice or restricted them to some extent. These countries include Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The government is going use these sources.

A batch of PILs were filed in the Supreme Court on this issue and the troubles of Muslim women in the country earlier and the Court gave four weeks of time to the government On September 5 to respond.


The All India Muslim Personal Law Board filed a counter affidavit in the Supreme Court. The Board argued that polygamy, triple talaq and nikah halala cannot be interfered since they are the matters of “legislative policy’. It furthermore stated that the practices given by Muslim Personal Law were according to their holy scripture (al-Quran).

A high-level committee was established last year by the ministry of women and child development. The committee recommended to ban the practice of triple talaq.
