Government announces repeal of farm laws

Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of farm laws and assured the farmer groups of the completion of the legislative process in the Winter Session of Parliament.

While announcing the repeal of three contentious farm laws, Modi said that a committee would be formed with representatives from both central and state governments. The committee will look into the issues related to agriculture like usage of fertilizers, change in crops patterns, Minimum Support Prices etc.

Many farmer groups have been protesting against the new farm laws announced by the central government for the past year. Mainly, farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are opposing these laws. As per some analysts, the centre made this announcement in the wake of the assembly elections. The Legislative Assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh will be held in the early months of 2022.

PM Modi said that the government consulted many stakeholders while bringing in these laws. Though many farmers were happy, a few of them were not satisfied with these laws.

He added that the government tried a lot to convince the farmer groups about the good intentions of the farm laws. It even tried to remove the particular sections of these laws to which they objected. As the government was not able to convince all of them, it decided to repeal the laws.

He said that the announcement to the repeal of these laws has been made on an auspicious day. Today is Gurupurab, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.

Modi appealed to all protesting farmers to return their homes as the legislation process for the repeal would also be completed in the upcoming session of Parliament.

PM said that the government had taken several initiatives for farmers like crop insurance and direct money transfer to farmers’ accounts in this context.
