Padmini Prakash, 31, opens new windows to our world through Lotus News in Tamil Nadu.

Five months after a court ruled that a transgender is a legal third gender, Padmini has climbed new heights. She feels that it is still worrying to tackle such a role, confessing that a focus on her diction, as well as a steady narrative pace to ensure clarity and legibility has been a bit of a challenge.

But last month, after she joined the station, she became so popular that she was quickly promoted to beam the Coimbatore-based Lotus News Channel’s daily 7 p.m. special bulletin.

Her life, as expected, hasn’t been smooth. She started to be a dancer and moved on to act in Tamil soap operas before joining Lotus. The world as she knew it was always discriminatory. Campaigners point out that in India we often force transgenders into prostitution. But in April, the Supreme Court gave a landmark judgement, according them a legal third gender and equal treatment.

Though India is not the first country in the world to do it, as Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh have legally recognised transgenders, the drive towards equality is picking up.
