Indian Railways offers discounts to students on ticket fares who are travelling for certain purposes.

That means students of certain categories can obtain tickets on concession prices.

However, many students are not aware of them.

Here are the important facts about Railways’ discounts to students:

School and college going girls can travel free of cost on MST (monthly season ticket) of general class. They can use this concession up to graduation. However, boys can avail this facility up to Class XII. The students of certain registered schools are permitted under this scheme.
Students of government schools who are studying in rural areas can get a discount of 75 percent when they are travelling for their entrance exam on general class travel.
Students who travel to appear for main written examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) can avail a discount of 50 percent. This is applicable to the students who appear for the exam of Central Staff Selection Commission also.
Students are entitled to get concession while going to their hometown if they are living away from home.
If the students are going to educational tours, they can avail a discount of 50 percent on sleeper class tickets.
Government school students in rural areas are entitled to get a discount of 75 percent for study tour once in a year.
Those who belong to SC and ST categories can get a discount of 75 percent.
Those who are undertaking research can avail a discount of 50 percent on tickets of sleeper class. This is applicable up to the age of 35 years.
Those who are participating in a work-camp can get a discount of 25 percent.
Foreign students can avail a discount of 50 percent if they travelling to join a camp or seminar conducted by the Government of India.
Marine engineering apprentice students who are undergoing training are entitled to 50 percent discount.
