Easier rules for importing electronics
The government is contemplating about relaxing criteria for importing of electronic goods like microwave ovens, laptops, mobile phones, televisions etc. Government is planning to do so by allowing brand owners to register their products with concerned authorities.
This planned change in rules will be helpful to most of the Indian mobile brands and multinational companies who don’t have manufacturing bases in the country and import their brands. At present, it is mandatory to register around 30 categories of electronic products and it can be done by product manufacturers only.
An official note of the Department of Electronics and IT (DEITY) said that the Industry has been asking that in many cases since the product design and quality assurance of product is controlled by the brand owners and since brand owners were willing to take the liability under compulsory registration scheme (CRS) in most such cases.
This CRS is for the sake of providing safe, secure, and proper quality products to Indian consumers while also monitoring influx of sub- standard imports. The government is also planning to improve the manufacturing eco system in the country with the help of this order.
