Digital India’s 12-year leap reshapes everyday life

Technology has become a defining force in India’s growth story over the past decade.

As the BJP-led NDA government completes 12 years at the Centre, digital transformation stands out as one of its most visible achievements.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has built a vast digital ecosystem that touches nearly every aspect of daily life.

Consequently, digital services have become faster, more accessible, and widely adopted across the country.

Online payments represent one of the biggest changes. India now accounts for 49% of global real-time payment transactions. In March 2026 alone, nearly 2,300 crore UPI transactions worth around ₹30 lakh crore were recorded.

As a result, people can transfer money instantly without carrying cash. From small street vendors to large shopping malls, UPI has become a common payment method.

Meanwhile, internet access has expanded at an unprecedented pace. Internet connections increased from over 25 crore in 2014 to 103 crore by December 2025.

Furthermore, 5G services now reach 99.9% of districts and cover 85% of the population. India has also emerged as the world’s second-largest 5G market after China.

The government has also focused on digital security. Through Cyber Swachhta Kendra, efforts continue to create a safer and more accountable cyberspace.

The initiative currently protects 98% of the digital population from growing cyber threats.

India’s technological ambitions extend beyond Earth as well. ISRO has significantly expanded its global presence.

While 35 foreign satellites were launched between the 1990s and 2014, the number has now risen to 399.

Agriculture has also joined the digital revolution. More than nine crore farmer IDs have been created.

Therefore, farmers can access agri-loans, subsidies, and crop insurance more easily. Aadhaar-linked bank accounts have further simplified financial transactions.

In addition, government platforms have strengthened citizen engagement. The MyGov platform has attracted over six crore users, encouraging greater public participation in governance.

DigiLocker has connected more than 69 crore users and issued over 950 crore documents. Consequently, citizens can securely store important records such as Aadhaar, PAN, driving licences, and vehicle registration certificates online.

Together, these initiatives have created a powerful digital public infrastructure, helping modernise governance, expand financial inclusion, and accelerate India’s journey toward a technology-driven economy.
