Corbevax get approval as a booster dose

Corbevax, the vaccine of Biological E, got approval as a booster dose for adult citizens aged above 18 years in the country.

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) approved it as a heterologous vaccine. Those who have been inoculated with two doses of either Covaxin or Covishield can get Corbevax as the booster dose.

Corbevax is the first heterologous booster dose in the country. The vaccine was approved for children aged 12-18 last February. After that, it is used as a COVID vaccine for children. Later in December, it was given nod to conduct trials as a booster dose in adults.

DCGI gave emergency use authorisation (EUA) to Corbevax for children between 5 and 12 years in late April this year. Until then, it was used as a COVID vaccine for children in the age group of 12 to 14 years as part of the government’s vaccination programme. Its price was fixed at ₹145 for that.

Indian government asked all adults to take a precaution dose in the wake of rising COVID cases across the globe.

In this scenario, Biological E reduced the price of the vaccine to ₹250 from ₹840 per dose for private vaccination centres. The price is inclusive of goods and services tax (GST). End-users need to pay ₹400 per dose, including administration charges and other taxes.

To take a booster dose or precaution dose, a gap of nine months is essential after the second shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, as per the government of India. That means users should wait for nine months to take a booster shot after taking their second dose of the COVID vaccine.

But, the government later revised the norms for overseas travellers to meet the rules imposed by other countries. The time gap specified for these travellers is three months. They can get their booster three months after getting their second dose.
