Low-oxalate foods that help prevent kidney stones
Calcium oxalate stones are the most common form of kidney stones. Oxalate is found in many food items like vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts. The calcium in your urine when combines with oxalate, forms calcium oxalate stones.
To prevent the problem, eat and drink calcium and oxalate-rich foods as both are combined in the gastrointestinal tract and thereby reduce the risk of forming stones in the urine. Also, limit the consumption of high-oxalate foods like sweet potatoes, spinach, raspberries etc. or consume low-oxalate foods to avoid kidney stone problem.
Here is a list of some food items that have low-oxalate:
- Apples have less amount of oxalate. Regular consumption of an apple not just helps prevent kidney stones but also protect you from many diseases. You can also consume it along with milk.
- Lemons prevent kidney stone formation due to their low-oxalate content. Besides, they are rich in potassium and citric acid to improve urine output and thereby eliminate excess oxalate content from the kidney.
- Grapes are loaded with polyphenols which reduce the risk of formation of oxalate stones. Some studies showed that consumption of grapes reduced the formation of oxalate crystals by 50 per cent.
- Papaya is widely used for the treatment of kidney stones in traditional medicine. It is rich in potassium and thus prevents the formation of kidney stones.
- Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamin B6 to help reduce the formation of urine oxalate.
- Watermelon is also rich in potassium. Besides, it is a lox-oxalate fruit. Hence, it helps regulate the acid level in the urine and also prevent the formation of kidney stones.
- Plums, especially black coloured fruits, have high antioxidants. They help prevent the risk of kidney stones. Plum juice is one of the best foods for a healthy kidney.
