Healthy foods for Migraine
Occasional headaches are common for anyone.
3/4th of people in the age group of 18 to 65 experience headache in a period of a year across the globe as per WHO. More than 20 per cent of people have a migraine, a severe form of headache which develops on one side of the head.
Other symptoms of migraine include nausea and light sensitivity.
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) says that plant-based foods help reduce a migraine headache.
Here is a list of certain foods that are beneficial to the people who suffer from migraine:
- Adding various colored foods in the diet helps reduce a migraine headache due to the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in them.
- Dehydration may also lead to the triggering of a migraine attack. Hence, eat fruits like melons and berries to prevent risk. Tomatoes and cucumbers also help in this regard.
- Magnesium is one of the important minerals to control migraine attacks. Brown rice is a great source of this mineral. So, eat brown rice regularly.
- Natural sweeteners such as honey, maple syrup etc. also help control migraine. These foods increase antioxidants and reduce headache thereby.
Certain foods are to be avoided to prevent a migraine attack:
- Chocolate triggers a migraine. It is the second most migraine triggering food as per the American Migraine Foundation. Due to its caffeine and beta-phenylethylamine, it can trigger a headache. Alcohol stood in the first place.
- Foods like cheese that have tyramine are associated with migraine attacks. Hence, do not consume cheese or limit your consumption.
- Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, stevia and sucralose also trigger the attacks. Hence, stay away from the foods that have these sweeteners like soft drinks, baked food, jams, jellies and candies.
- Salty foods like instant noodles, pasta sauce, mixed nuts etc. increase blood pressure and thereby chances of migraine.
- MSG foods, frozen foods, canned foods, cured meat, fermented food and pickles are some other foods to be avoided to prevent a migraine attack.
