White rice though tastes good, it is poor in nutritional value than brown rice and red rice. Many people might have known the health benefits of brown rice. But, only a few people know the health benefits of red rice.

Red rice is growing in popularity in recent days due to its nutritional value. It is rich in anthocyanin. Compared to other rice varieties, red rice is highly nutritious. It has a red husk. The rice is completely unhulled or partially hulled.

Red rice is grown in the northeastern states and southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka etc.

Red rice has the following health benefits:


  • As the fat content in this rice is almost nil, health-conscious people and those who want to lose their weight can eat it without fear of gaining weight. Besides, it has soluble and insoluble fibre to keep the weight in control.
  • It regulates blood glucose. Due to its richness in antioxidants and manganese, diabetics can also consume it. Since it has a low glycemic index, it is an ideal food for diabetics.
  • The manganese content in red rice helps control asthma. It also improves the function of the respiratory system.
  • It is loaded with vitamins and minerals like iron to help people with anaemia. It also prevents oxidative stress and premature ageing.
  • The fibre content also helps improve digestive function. It controls constipation and eliminates toxins from the body. It also facilitates bowel movements.

Cooking procedure of red rice:

  • Red rice requires a longer time to cook than white rice. It takes almost 40 to 50 minutes for cooking. For a cup of red rice, you have to add two and a half cups of water.
  • Apart from cooking rice in a normal way, you can also use this rice for making salad and kheer. You can even use it for idli and dosa.
