Nowadays, many people are opting for plant-based milk alternatives. Oat milk is one such alternative. It is becoming popular in recent days. It is free of lactose. If the milk is made from gluten-free oats, then people with gluten intolerance can also use it.

Oats are good for the heart, bone as they are loaded with many nutrients like calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and vitamins like A, B2, B12 and D.

However, oat milk may miss some of these nutrients since it is made from strained oats. Hence, many commercial oat milk manufacturers enrich it with minerals and vitamins.

Most brands of oat milk available in the market are fortified with vitamins like A, D, B2, and B12 and also minerals.

If you want to make oat milk at your home, you can do it in the following way:

To make oat milk, you need oats and water in a ratio of one part to three parts. That means one cup of oats needs three cups of water. Blend both of them and strain the mixture using a cheesecloth. Add honey, maple syrup, vanilla, or dates to enhance flavour.

But, note that homemade milk misses some nutrients, and you won’t get them like with those bought at stores that are fortified. You can store this milk in a refrigerator for four to five days by keeping it in an airtight glass jar.

Oat milk has the following health benefits:

• Oat milk is low in fat and good for those who want to have a low-fat diet. It is also low in LDL. Some studies showed that regular consumption of oat milk could reduce LDL by 5% and total blood cholesterol by 3%.
• It is rich in beta-glucans, a soluble fibre that is good for heart health.
• Beta-glucan also helps regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down the absorption of carbohydrates in the gut.
• If you consume fortified-oat milk, it is high in minerals and vitamins. It improves your bone health.
