Can you prevent autoimmune diseases

You might have heard about autoimmune diseases. In recent days, several celebrities also revealed that they were suffering from autoimmune diseases.

Your immune system attacks pathogens and protects your body from diseases. But, in autoimmune diseases, your immune system attacks your body mistakenly. As a result, the healthy cells in your body are attacked. Thus, it can lead to an autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune diseases can affect many cells in your body and thereby affect the health of any organ. Rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Addison’s disease, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, vasculitis etc., are some common autoimmune diseases.

There are no treatments to cure autoimmune diseases, yet symptoms may be eased with certain drugs like immune-suppressing drugs.

The exact reason for the misfire of the immune system is not known.  However, studies say that infections, some medications, smoking, obesity, and exposure to chemicals can increase the risk of developing an autoimmune disease.

Some people are more vulnerable to getting these diseases than others. As per reports, women are more prone to get these diseases than men. Also, these diseases are common in childbearing age in them.

Similarly, some diseases are common in certain ethnic groups. Also, some autoimmune diseases run in some families.

Though it is not possible to prevent autoimmune diseases, health experts suggest the following tips:

Eating a healthy diet is vital for your well-being. Add many vegetables and fruits to your diet.

Some researchers suspect that a high-fat and high-sugar diet can trigger an immune response as it is associated with inflammation. However, it has not enough evidence. But, high fats and sugars are not good for health. So, stop eating them. Also, limit intake of processed foods.

As smoking increases the incidence of autoimmune diseases, staying away from cigarettes and other tobacco products can protect you from them.

Regular exercise can promote good health.
