Benefits of sunlight for health
In the olden days, people used to wake up early in the morning and start work. They also stopped working at the sunset and took a rest. Thus, their circadian rhythms worked according to the sunlight. That’s why most of them did not have vitamin D deficiency, which is associated with many health disorders, including depression.
But now, due to changes in lifestyle and jobs, people are sleeping late at night and waking up late in the morning. As a result, many people are missing the sunrise and the health benefits of sunlight.
Here is a list of benefits of sunlight for your health:
- Sunlight improves the production of vitamin D, which is beneficial for your physical and mental health. Several studies reveal that low vitamin D levels can increase the risk of depression and schizophrenia. Thus, sunlight can promote your mental health.
- Sunlight improves your sleep. The study of the National Institutes of Health shows that one-hour exposure to sunlight in the morning can help you sleep better at night. It also can regulate the production of serotonin and melatonin.
- It increases energy in the body and improves your mood. It eases the symptoms of bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
- Some studies show that certain cancers are associated with low levels of vitamin D in the body. Hence, exposure to sunlight in the early morning can improve vitamin D and thereby reduce the risk of developing cancers.
- Few studies reveal that exposure to sunlight can trigger the skin to release nitrogen oxide, which eventually dilates arteries and thus can reduce blood pressure. It also can regulate high body fat and blood sugar and reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
- Sunlight can help treat inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis etc. It can prevent certain autoimmune diseases like arthritis as well.
- It also strengthens bones and improves bone health. It reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
