ATM frauds are increasing day by day. Several ATMs of the banks including reputed ones are also being used by fraudsters for their fraudulent transactions.

Recently, a video was shared on Twitter which showed skimming equipment has been se tup by fraudsters in an ATM of the Canara Bank in New Delhi.

The bank located it and removed it. It assured that no data of the customers was compromised.

The bank also gave certain protective measures. Customers need to enter OTP for withdrawals of more than ₹10,000. They can also switch on and off their debit or credit card as per the use using Mserve app.

However, customers need to be aware of while using ATMs.

Here is a list of certain precautions while using ATM for cash withdrawals or balance enquiry:

  • Be attentive to your surroundings.
  • Do not ask strangers’ help. Also, do not talk to any stranger in the ATM room.
  • If you need any help, ask bank employees. If you are doing your transaction after bank hours, take someone from your family who are well aware of the process.
  • If you have any suspicion on the person who used ATM before you, then go to another ATM.
  • Be careful while entering your PIN and make sure no one including a possible overhead camera would watch it.
  • Even after you collect your cash, wait till the main screen i.e. the welcome screen appears.
  • Check the card reader of the ATM, below the cash dispenser and above the PIN to find any abnormal things.
  • Fraudsters may setup small cameras and storage device to steal your financial data. So, watch carefully.
  • ATM frauds are the highest in Maharashtra followed by Delhi. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka stood in the next two places. Banks are looking to prevent these frauds including a reduction in the number of transaction in a day.
