PPF Loan: Get Cash Without Breaking Your Savings
If you need emergency funds, your long-term savings may offer a way to raise cash without closing the account.
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) allows eligible subscribers to take a loan against their balance during the initial years of the account.
PPF is a government-backed savings scheme that combines long-term wealth creation with tax benefits. Subscribers can deposit between ₹500 and ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year.
However, the account comes with a long lock-in period, making premature closure unsuitable for most short-term needs.
A PPF loan can provide an alternative when unexpected expenses arise. It allows investors to access funds while keeping their PPF account active. Consequently, the remaining balance can continue to earn interest under the scheme.
However, the loan facility does not begin immediately after opening the account.
Subscribers can borrow from the third financial year until the end of the sixth financial year after opening the account.
For example, a PPF account opened in 2023 would generally qualify for loans from the 2025–26 financial year through 2028–29, subject to the applicable rules.
The borrowing limit is also restricted. An account holder can take a loan of up to 25% of the eligible balance from two years before the year of application.
Therefore, if the relevant PPF balance was ₹2 lakh, the maximum loan would be ₹50,000.
To apply, subscribers need to submit Form D at the concerned bank branch or post office.
The application generally requires PPF account details, the passbook and required identification documents.
After verification, the lender processes the request and credits the sanctioned amount to the applicant’s bank account.
Thus, a PPF loan can provide temporary liquidity without immediately disturbing long-term savings.
However, borrowers should consider the applicable interest, repayment conditions and their ability to repay before opting for the facility.
