Know the reasons for the delay in the IT refund
While many taxpayers received a refund from the income tax department, some others did not get their income tax refund.
The sooner you file your income tax returns (ITR), the faster you get your IT refund. This is because many taxpayers file their ITR just before days of the due date. As more returns are filed, the income tax department has to process all of them.
In this context, your refund may get delayed. However, there are many other reasons for this.
Here are some reasons for the delay in the IT refund:
If you had filed a return but did not verify it, your IT will not be processed. It results in a delay in getting an IT refund. So, you must verify your ITR after filing it.
Failure in the validation of a bank account is one of the most common reasons for the delay in the IT refund. Log into the income tax portal, add a valid bank account and validate it. Also, remove any closed or deactivated bank accounts. If the pre-validation is failed, re-validate the bank account to receive an income tax refund.
If any mismatch is found in your ITR with form 26 AS, then you have to rectify it and file a revised return. On the other hand, if you find a tax credit mismatch between the TDS, TCS or any other challan amount and amount as per 26AS, inform your employer or deductor immediately. They will rectify it and file a revised TDS return.
Sometimes, ITR processing will be delayed. So, you will get a refund after the completion of ITR processing. You can check the status of your ITR or refund on the e-portal of the income tax.
If you have any outstanding tax dues, you will not get a refund. The income tax department sends a notice stating the outstanding tax amount. In such cases, you have to recalculate the tax liability or confirm the original ITR with supporting documents.
