The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the Universal Postal Union (UPU) 2026 International Letter Writing Competition for Young People, inviting participation from students across the country.

The initiative aims to encourage creativity, emotional expression, and thoughtful writing among school students.

According to a circular issued by CBSE on January 13, 2026, the competition is being organised by the Department of Posts and marks the 55th edition of the global initiative.

This year’s theme is “Write a letter to a friend about why human connection matters in a digital world”.

The topic urges students to reflect on emotional bonds and relationships in an era increasingly shaped by technology.

The competition will be conducted at the school level, with institutions required to organise their internal contests by March 20.

Schools must then send their best three evaluated entries to the directorate by March 31. The top national-level entry will qualify as India’s official submission for the international competition.

At the national level, the first prize carries a cash award of ₹50,000 along with a certificate. The second and third prize winners will receive ₹25,000 and ₹10,000, respectively, along with certificates.

At the Circle level, prizes include ₹25,000 for first place, ₹10,000 for second place, and ₹5,000 for third place.

The Gold Medalist at the international level may also be offered a visit to the UPU Headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, or an alternative prize, depending on the discretion of the UPU.

Participants receiving special mentions will be awarded certificates and other prizes.

The competition will be held in English or any of the recognised languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.

CBSE has requested schools to organise the event in coordination with designated Nodal Officers of their respective Circles or Regions. The list of Nodal Officers will be shared separately and made available on the India Post website.

CBSE has urged schools to promote maximum participation, noting that such initiatives help students build empathy, improve expression, and develop global awareness beyond academic learning.
