Thiruthani Murugan temple - A sacred sanctuary of serenity | Fusion - WeRIndia

The Thiruthani Murugan Temple stands majestically on Thiruthani hill, revered as one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga.

Located approximately two hours from Chennai, this sacred site draws devotees with its deep spiritual significance and rich history. 

The temple is notably marked by 365 steps, symbolizing the days of the year, leading up to the shrine.

According to legend, Lord Indra, the king of gods, gave his daughter Devasena in marriage to Lord Muruga, along with significant dowries, including his white elephant Airavatam.

However, when Airavatam left, Indra’s wealth began to diminish. On Lord Muruga’s counsel, Indra desired the elephant’s return but was bound by his initial promise. 

Compromising, he commanded the elephant to face east towards him. This myth explains why the temple’s elephant statue faces east.

Another tale recounts that Lord Indra included a sandal stone in Devasena ‘s dowry.

Over time, sandal paste prepared on this stone was believed to possess healing properties. Today, this sandal paste is a divine offering, made exclusively on festival days. 

It is not worn but dissolved in water and consumed by devotees, believed to cure ailments.

The temple also bears a mark of celestial conflict; the chest of Lord Subramanya’s idol is hollow, a result of an attack by the demon Tarakasuran. 

Despite this, the temple radiates peace and tranquillity, a place where Lord Murugan is said to have relinquished his anger after defeating the demon Surapadman.

Moreover, it is said that after defeating Ravana, Lord Rama visited the temple seeking peace, underlining its importance as a place of healing and solace.

Thiruthani Murugan Temple not only serves as a testament to divine tales and celestial lore but also as a beacon of hope and healing, drawing thousands of pilgrims yearly. 

Its storied past and the divine presence of Lord Muruga continue to make it a significant spiritual destination.
