Making payments seamless: UPI goes offline
In an innovative leap forward, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has now made it possible to conduct transactions without the need for an internet connection.
By simply dialling *99# from a mobile phone linked to a bank account, users across India can access UPI services offline.
This breakthrough initiative, supported by the National Payments Corporation of India, bridges the digital divide.
Besides, it makes digital payments accessible to all, regardless of internet connectivity.
The service is a boon for users in remote or rural areas where internet access is limited or unreliable.
It’s affiliated with 83 leading banks and available through four major telecom service providers, ensuring wide accessibility.
Moreover, users can navigate the service in 13 different languages, including English and Hindi, making it user-friendly for a diverse population.
To initiate offline UPI transactions, users first need to dial *99# and follow a simple setup process.
This includes selecting a language, entering the bank’s IFSC code, and linking the desired bank account by entering the last six digits and expiry date of the debit card.
Once set up, the offline UPI payment feature is activated, allowing for seamless transactions without internet access.
Using the service is straightforward. Users dial *99#, choose the ‘Send Money’ option, and follow prompts to enter the recipient’s UPI ID, the amount (up to ₹5,000), and their UPI PIN to authenticate the transaction. A nominal fee of ₹0.50 is charged per transaction, making it an affordable option for daily use.
This offline UPI service not only simplifies the payment process but also significantly expands the reach of digital payments across India.
By eliminating the barrier of internet dependency, it ensures that more people can benefit from the convenience and security of UPI transactions.
Whether it’s paying for groceries, utilities, or transferring money to a friend, the offline UPI service is set to revolutionize the way India transacts, making digital payments truly inclusive.
