60-year-old earns lakhs from crochet toys
In today’s world, hobbies are no longer just a way to pass the time, but they can also become a source of income and recognition.
Kanchan Bhadani, a 60-year-old housewife from Jharkhand, is a prime example of this.
She turned her love for knitting toys into a successful business. She not only earned lakhs but employed many other women.
Kanchan’s inspiration came from the fact that while the textile industry is evolving rapidly, there is still a high demand for handmade embroidery and knitted items.
Kanchan learned the art of crochet from her grandmother and aunts in Kolkata. She saw an opportunity to teach it to the tribal women in Jharkhand who were struggling to make ends meet.
Despite being a mother of three, Kanchan never let go of her passion for crochet. She occasionally taught classes to women who were interested in learning the skill.
One day, while discussing with her children, they suggested that they sell crochet toys online. With the help of her children, Kanchan set up a website and social media accounts. It helped her showcase and sell their products.
Kanchan teaches the tribal women how to crochet. They make the toys in the comfort of their own homes. Each person can earn up to ₹5,000 per month by crocheting for 2-3 hours a day.
The team produces a variety of soft toys, including turtles, rabbits, octopuses, elephants, and human figures. They are all made from wool without wasting any material.
The toys are a hit with toddlers. They are sold on various online platforms like Flipkart and Amazon.
In a year, they were able to sell three thousand dolls and earn a significant profit. Kanchan’s dream of making a difference in the tribal community has come true. She hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions regardless of their age.
