Markapur’s Crochet Star Swapnika Raagni
Kondepogu Swapnika Raagni, a 31-year-old talented crochet designer from Markapur in Prakasam district, recently made her mark on the global stage by earning a Guinness World Record.
Her contribution to the “Largest Display of Crochet Squares” event held in Vizag earned her the distinction of being the first woman from her district to receive this recognition.
Organized by Mahila Manovikas Crafts & Creations, the event brought together 450 crochet artists from across India, aged six to 86.
Together, they presented an astonishing 58,112 crochet squares, far exceeding the initial target of 20,000 squares.
The organization received the official Guinness certification on September 22, 2024, making this their third record achievement.
In her professional life, Swapnika is a pharmacist at the Dupadu Primary Health Centre, but her intricate crochet designs shared on Instagram, have garnered admiration and a growing following.
Reflecting on her journey, she credits her grandmother, Christianamma, a retired teacher, as her mentor.
She started learning crochet from her grandmother at around eight years old.
Her grandmother learned the craft from British teachers, and her skill inspired her deeply.
Noticing the growing interest of crochet enthusiasts, Swapnika is considering starting online crochet classes.
Swapnika says that compared to North India, crochet is not popular in South India as many people here prefer to learn cloth weaving or embroidery.
She added that patience and creativity are essential to the craft. Beyond crochet, Swapnika is a Kuchipudi dancer and has training in karate and music.
She comes from an accomplished family; her late father was a teacher, poet, and artist, while her mother is a retired teacher.
Her husband works as an interior designer, and her brother shifted from corporate life to running his own tea stall franchise.
Dedicated to her art, Swapnika spends Sundays designing and sharing new creations on Instagram.
