Different types of COVID-19 Traits
Do you know how many types of COVID-19 traits are there? There are three different types of COVID-19 traits as per scientists.
COVID-19 patients can be categorized into three types based on their complications, comorbidities, and clinical results.
As per the research of scientists, there are three types of COVID-19 disease traits. The study was conducted on 7,538 COVID-19 patients in the USA between March 7 and August 25, 2020. Among these patients, around 1,000 patients required hospitalization.
The data were collected from 14 hospitals in the Midwestern US and 60 primary care clinics in Minnesota. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.
The scientists categorized these three types as Phenotype I, Phenotype II, and Phenotype III. A majority of patients, i.e. 60 per cent of patients presented with Phenotype II.
Around 23 per cent of patients presented with Phenotype I. It is considered an adverse phenotype due to its worst clinical consequences. These patients had the highest level of comorbidities. Most of these issues were related to the heart and kidney.
Nearly 17 per cent of patients presented with Phenotype III. Scientists called it the favourable phenotype due to its best clinical results. These patients had the lowest rate of complications and mortality. However, this group had the highest rate of respiratory comorbidities. Besides, they had more risk of readmission to hospitals than other phenotypes. Compared to Phenotype III, the other two types had a greater risk of death.
The scientists concluded that all COVID-10 patients did not suffer in the same manner. While some had greater risk, some had the lowest comorbidities. This study will help provide phenotype-specific medical care and better clinical outcomes in the future. They also expect this study will pave the way for future studies.
