India to participate in WHO’s Solidarity trial | Fusion - WeRIndia

Soon, India is likely to participate in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) solidarity trial to develop potential drugs against deadly COVID-19.

Dr RR Gangakhedar, Head of Department, Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases at ICMR said that India would soon start its participation in the solidarity trial.

This is due to the rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the country. Earlier, the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in India were small, so the contribution would have looked minute. But, now that the number of coronavirus cases is increasing in the country, India’s contribution to the solidarity trial will be also be considered.

Solidarity is a multi-arm and multi-country clinical trial to seek the best treatment for COVID-19.

The total number of cases in India soared to 877 with 19 deaths. The country is under lockdown now.

The sudden announcement of lockdown created a chaotic condition among several people across various states in India. Students who are staying in hostels and migrant workers suffered a lot. Pilgrims were stuck in distant places and they were not able to return to their homes due to the present condition.

Several labourers are journeying to reach their homes. Some even are walking to reach their place.

In this context, the Centre directed all states and UTs to look after migrant workers so that they won’t need to travel to other places.

The Health Ministry issued an advisory to all states and UTS directing to pay attention to these workers and provide food and shelter to them especially to daily wage workers. It also suggested to involve NGOs if needed to support these migrant workers.

The Health Ministry also said that ventilators would be manufactured on mass production with the support of Public Service Undertakings (PSU). 10,000 ventilators will be manufactured by one PSU and 30,000 ventilators will be made available by Bharat Electricals.

From now on, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will also be obtained from indigenous manufacturers.
