Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme (or PMUY scheme) will be able to provide Liquified Petroleum Gas connections to the women of households below the poverty line.
These households are known as Below Poverty Line households (or BPL households).
Under the PMUY scheme, there will be 5 crore LPG connections given to BPL households over a time period of three years. This scheme aims to protect the health of impoverished women and children by providing them with clean fuel for cooking.
A total of ₹8,000 crores has been allocated for the implementation of the PMUY scheme. Since this scheme is particularly geared to protecting the health of women and children, the connections will be issued in the names of the women in the BPL households.
The entire cost of the connection and everything that it includes will be paid for by the government.
There are certain criteria which are needed in order to be eligible to get a LPG connection under the PMUY scheme.
In order for a BPL household to get an LPG connection, the applicant must be a woman belonging to the household, and this woman must be a permanent Indian resident above the age of 18 years.
Additionally, the household must not already own an LPG connection, and the monthly income of the household must be below a certain level, as defined by the union territories and the state governments.
Several documents are also needed for a PMUY application. All applicants must have a BPL certificate authorized by a municipality chairman, a BPL ration card, a photo ID, and a recently-taken passport-size photograph.
Additionally, other important documents may need to be produced, such as a driving license, a lease agreement, a passport copy, or a credit card statement.
With this scheme well underway, many impoverished women and children are now receiving the benefits of clean cooking fuel.
