Car by IITians claimed to be faster than any sports car
More than 75 engineering students from different streams of IIT Bombay developed a racing car. They are claiming that their car named ORCA is not just the fastest Indian car but faster than other sport cars made by Porsche, Tesla or Audi. The students are pitting this car against other similar cars at the Formula Student UK competition. More than 100 student teams from around the world are participating in the competition.
The car took nine months to be developed. It has sponsorships from NRB Bearings, Tata Motors, CEAT Tyres etc. It has a top speed of more than 145 kmph.
Rishabh Kappasia, one of the students who worked on the car says that the car has an acceleration of 0-100 kmph in 3.47 seconds. He says that this makes ORCA faster than any other sports car made by Porsche, Tesla or Audi. The acceleration is not the only special feature of the car. The car is made with a special steel-frame chassis with carbon-fibre manufactured body. This reduces the weight and gives better stability at high speeds.
The car is made with more than 20,000 components. With their effort, the team has reduced the weight of the chassis from 55 kg to 29 kg.
In order to ensure safety for drivers, the car is installed with a low-voltage safety system. The car has a battery pack of 95 cells that supplies continuous power of 80 kilowatt.
The team is participating in Formula Student UK competition. It is an annual car competition. Even in the past many teams from IIT Bombay participated in the event and even received award for design improvement in three consecutive years.
The team made this car based on their own ideas. It was not part of their curriculum but it came through their innovation. The team also takes new students based on their knowledge.
