The problem of scarcity in drinking water is ever growing. There are many areas without proper access to clean water. In order to overcome this problem, a new solution has been made by Gabriele Diamanti.

He made the ‘Eliodomestico’, a personal desalination still. The machine works like an upside down coffee percolator.

The device is a unique ceramic solar powered still. Using the solar power it can turn saltwater into fresh water. The device is very useful for developing nations because it can be built under just $50.

The device is made with two ceramic pieces which sit on top of one another. The top piece has a black container into which salt water will be poured. The heat from sun turns the water in steam. This causes the pressure to build until the steam is force into a tube leading it to a container. In this container, the water is cooled and condensed. The condensed water is then collected in a basin.

The Eliodomestico is made so that it can be carried upon the head when traveling. This is especially useful in developing nations where it is common practice to carry water on head.

In many areas of countries like India, people are forced to walk a long distance just to collect freshwater. With the help of this device, one can collect water easily. The device has the ability to collect around five liters of water every day. It is also quite cheap to build which makes it accessible to people of low economy.

The prototype of the device was financed by Fondation d’entreprise Hermès. The development of the device took 8 years (2005-2012). The Eliodomestico was a finalist at Prix Emile Hermès competition in 2011. It even got a special mention at Well-Tech Award in 2012 and was the pro winner of the Core77 Design Awards in 2012, in the social impact category.
