An adventurous expedition to save yaks

An adventurous expedition to save yaks

A first of its kind expedition has been planned by The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). It is called the “Sea Route to Silk Route” and it will happen at altitudes of 17,000 feet! The expedition will start later this week in order to commemorate the paramilitary’s 54th Raising Day and also raise awareness about Yak conservation. Yaks are species living in Indian Himalayas and they are facing extinction.

Public Relations Officer of ITBP Vivek Kumar Pandey stated that in order to commemorate the Raising Day and spread message of conservation of Yak, ITBP has planned to do this motor car expedition ‘Sea Route to Silk Route’. It will be a first of its kind on such a high altitude.

There will be 15 members in the expedition team. They will be distributed in five vehicles which will cover a distance of nearly 4,000 km. From Kandivilli to Karakoram, the team will cover various cities including Mumbai, Nagpur, Jhansi, Delhi, Chandigarh, Kullu, Manali, Rohtang, Kellong and Leh in their travel of 15 days. Their journey is about 4000 km.

The end of the journey will be travelling on the high altitude roads at places in Ladakh region which are more than 17,000 feet high. Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Himalayan Explorers and private club Mahindra Adventure will also be part of the Expedition.


The team will start their journey on October 24. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who will most likely be the Chief Guest of the ITBP Raising Day function will flag off the Expedition formally on October 28 in Greater Noida.

The team will use the expedition to spread awareness about Yak conservation. In order to further help, the message about Yak conservation, the paramilitary has planned a seminar on it at Leh on October 31.

The team will meet director General of ITBP Krishna Chaudhary in the return journey so as to share the experiences during the trip.
