Railways to install CCTV cameras in all coaches for safer travel

In a major safety upgrade, Indian Railways will install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 train coaches and 15,000 locomotives across the country.

This move aims to boost passenger security and prevent criminal activities on board.

The decision comes after successful trials of CCTV systems in the coaches and engines of the Northern Railway.

The progress of these trials was reviewed in a high-level meeting on Saturday by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, and senior Railway Board officials.

Each railway coach will now be fitted with four dome-type CCTV cameras, two at each entrance area.

Meanwhile, each locomotive will be equipped with six CCTV cameras: one each at the front, rear, and both sides of the engine.

Additionally, both the front and rear cabs will have one dome camera and two desk-mounted microphones.

The cameras will be installed in common movement areas near the doors of the coaches.

Officials say this setup will significantly enhance the ability to monitor and identify suspicious activity while maintaining passenger privacy.

Vaishnaw directed officials to ensure high-quality footage, even at train speeds above 100 kmph and in low-light conditions.

He also encouraged the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for analysing camera data, suggesting collaboration with the IndiaAI mission for smarter surveillance solutions.

The system is expected to be a game-changer in enhancing onboard security.

It marks a significant step in Indian Railways’ broader plan to modernise its infrastructure and offer a more secure travel experience.

While the total cost of the project has not been officially announced, the investment reflects a clear focus on safety and innovation.

Officials added that footage from these cameras could also help in resolving complaints and improving response during emergencies.

This initiative underlines the commitment of Indian Railways to making journeys safer, smarter, and more passenger-friendly across its vast network.
