Home remedies for tailbone pain

Coccydynia is the medical term for pain in the tailbone area. It literally means “tailbone pain.”

It often affects daily activities such as sitting, walking, using the bathroom, and, for women, even menstruation.

The primary cause of coccydynia is trauma. This may result from:

  • Falling on a hard surface
  • Pregnancy or childbirth
  • Long periods of sitting
  • Spinal surgeries
  • Repetitive activities like cycling or rowing
  • Medical conditions like arthritis or osteomyelitis

Tailbone pain is very common, especially in adults and teens. It affects women five times more often than men.


Also, obese individuals are three times more likely to suffer from coccydynia compared to those at a healthy weight.

Here are a few home remedies for tailbone pain:

Hot or Cold Packs

Apply a hot water bottle or ice pack to the painful area for 15 minutes, up to four times daily. Heat or cold helps reduce inflammation and accelerates healing.

Use a Coccydynia Pillow

A U-shaped or doughnut cushion relieves pressure on the tailbone while sitting, aiding recovery and minimising discomfort.

Massage Therapy

Gently massage the tailbone area with warm oil for 30 minutes, twice daily. This improves circulation and reduces soreness.

Castor Oil Application

Warm some castor oil and apply it to the lower back. Wrap it with a bandage overnight. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties help soothe pain.

Boost Vitamin Intake

Deficiencies in Vitamin D, B6, and B12 can worsen tailbone pain. Include foods like eggs, whole grains, soy, legumes, and dairy, and get regular sunlight exposure.

Epsom Salt Bath

Soak in a bath with 2 cups of Epsom salt for 10–15 minutes to relax back muscles and ease discomfort.

Tailbone Pain Relief Exercises

  • Lie down, pull one knee to your chest, hold for 30 seconds, and switch legs.
  • Kneel, stretch your arms forward, lower your body, and rest your forehead on the floor.
  • Lie on your back, cross one ankle over the opposite knee, pull the supporting thigh toward the chest, and hold.

Coccydynia can be painful but is usually manageable at home with care and consistency.
